Residents in an Essex town have been warned to stay indoors after a gunman went on the run following a burglary.
Police were called to reports of a break-in at a house in Wivenhoe late last night before a suspect - thought to be carrying a gun - ran off.
The armed man is still on the run, leading police to close off a number of roads and tell residents in some streets to remain indoors.
There were unconfirmed reports last night of shots being fired either during or after the break-in.
Essex Police have confirmed they found a gunman after being called to a break-in at a property in Stanley Road at around 9.35pm. The suspect fled the scene.
A home on the road remains taped off this morning with police officers stood outside the property.
One resident said: 'I don't really feel safe this morning knowing that someone is out there with a gun.
'There were people saying last night he was carrying a shotgun which is incredibly worrying.
'It was the talk of the town last night in the pubs. Police were crawling all over here and it's only a quiet place normally so of course everyone noticed it.'
