Arsene Wenger Will Resign As Arsenal Coach If Bayern Munich Wins Arsenal Tonight!

'You will miss me when I'm gone': Arsene Wenger hints media in an exclusive interview....do you think he would resign if Bayern Munich win Arsenal in tonight's Champions League round of 16 stage? I doubt cos he must be aware of the result of that match even before it kicks off....
'My contract ends in 2014. I will have completed 30 years without interruption at top level; football demands a lot of commitment' says Gunners boss.

Arsene Wenger yesterday dropped a huge hint about his future after warning: “You will miss me when I’m gone.”

Wenger appeared to be working towards his Emirates end game as he also spelled out his achievements down the years and jobs he has turned down to remain loyal as if he wanted to deliver a timely reminder to fed-up fans.

It was bizarre timing on the eve of the Gunners' biggest game of the season against German powerhouse Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

And even more bizarre that Wenger should get so upset about a story - which he dismissed as “false and lies” - which claimed he will be offered a new contract despite Arsenal’s indifferent season.

Wenger clearly understands that the fans are angry.

And he knows it could get even uglier if Arsenal get beaten by Bayern and fans then believe he could be staying for an extra two years beyond his current deal which expires in 2014.

But in dismissing the notion of him staying longer he also raised the ever growing possibility of his departure as he refused to answer questions as to when - and if ever - he would discuss a new contract.

“I am sure you would miss me when I am gone,” said Wenger as he turned on the sarcasm.

“I am not sure you are interested. When we lost at home to Blackburn I am not sure you are worried.

“My contract ends in 2014. I will have completed 30 years without interruption at top level; football demands a lot of commitment - I may not be quality, but commitment for sure.

“I think I have shown my commitment to this club and one day I will give you the list I have not signed for and you will see that I am committed to this club.

“We are the only team in England who have played the season unbeaten. It’s very difficult to do. The biggest luxury of it is when you start the game knowing that you will win.

“The biggest luxury in our job is to wonder whether you will win or not. That’s the recent history of the team which makes and builds that confidence.

“Of course we are underdogs, yes of course. You just have to read the English press and you understand that.

"But tomorrow we play a big football game and people can focus on that.

“This game is massive for us. Not because of what happened on Saturday against Blackburn but because we started the season with a lot of scepticism, I think we have made improvements and it would be nice for us to continue with this improvement until the end of the season.”

Wenger’s season has suffered more ups and downs than the average roller coaster.

Dumped out of the Capital One Cup and FA Cup by lower opposition, Arsenal are miles behind in the title race and the Champions League is their last hope of silverware.

But, in fairness to Wenger, his rant was not designed to try to disguise Arsenal’s and his own failings this season.

In fact, Wenger even accepted that Arsenal have dropped below his standards this season.

Wenger said: “You can criticise me and say I’m a bad manager. I’d never come back to you on that.

"But I think when you work like that, you will never find any story about me that I’ve taken money anywhere, or things like that.

“When you criticise (about being too far behind) on that then it is true.

"I can only say I am sorry, you are right, we are far too far away from Manchester United.

“We are of course criticised for that. But we are not the only ones.

"Some clubs have invested more money than us for years and they are behind as well. We accept that kind of criticism.

“I am not a conspiracy theorist. I am 30 years in this job and if I was paranoid you would know it already.

"I just think that when I worked for 16 years in the country I expect a certain respect.

“You can criticise me and say I am doing a bad job, but manipulative things, when they are wrong, I don’t accept.”

Wenger continually going back to the talk of a new contract told its own story.

It is clear he wants to disassociate himself with the story and, in doing so, raised the greater question of whether even he thinks he is reaching the end game.

It was almost sad that Wenger should choose the eve of such a prestige game and a huge challenge to have such a public meltdown but it was extremely revealing as questions begin to mount over whether he is on his way out.

But Wenger made it clear he still believes in his players even though he was showing signs of cracking up under the pressure.

“We have fought the whole season against everybody here,” said Wenger.

“’The players are not good enough, buy players and all that,’ but one day you will realise that this team has fantastic qualities.

“What is important is that you play to win the competition and at some stage you have to play a big team. We play against a good opponent.

“If I listen to your questions, we are not favourites but I trust our quality, our spirit and our mental strength.

"So see you tonight!”

Three to watch

Manuel Neuer: The Bayern keeper has been behind Europe’s meanest defence – even with a missing finger. Neuer is trying out a new glove – on the right hand only – which connects the index and middle together into one slot. Kept a clean sheet at Wolfsburg at the weekend.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: The Germany midfielder rampages through the pitch with a brilliant balance of skill, craft and industry. Also has a thunderous long-range shot in armoury.

Franck Ribery: The flying Frenchman will take some stopping with his pace. A master dribbler, the scar-faced winger is back in top form after being plagued by knee and ankle injuries in recent years.
